Best Time of Year to Start House Construction?

I have pondered this question for a long time myself. Many people seem to recommend beginning construction in spring so that you may take advantage of temperate weather and good likelihood of avoiding rainy conditions and cold temperatures which may set you back. Also, in spring, you can often get most of the above ground structure built before winter comes. Moreover, a few contractors say that fall can be a good time too. Sometimes, the pricing on materials is lower, and it is still before the cold temperatures of winter come and construction is usually not as busy as the summer months. The one issue is, of course, planning carefully so that the weather does not hinder the schedule.
In the end, I think it would best depend on you as a consumer and how prepared you are, your area, etc. Getting a proper estimating service done beforehand can really help. It gives you a better idea of pricing and other factors that may determine the best time to build.
What about you all, has anyone built a project in the winter or late fall? How did it turn out?
